Hello Family!!
We're having an official baptism this Saturday!! It will be for Ben Flynn at 7:00. We are so excited!! He started coming to church regularly in April and he has a calling in scouts right now. He's always there at any of the primary kid's baptisms and when ever someone moves in or out of the ward, he's there to help. We went over to his home yesterday and their home teacher/good friend was there. Brother Smith gave each of the kids a Priesthood blessing to start off the school year and then as he was leaving him and Sister Flynn kept making comments that implied Ben would be getting baptized soon. We had met with the family a few weeks ago and tried to set a date, but he felt he wasn't ready at the time to set a date. We had planned a lesson that would lead into a baptismal invite for yesterday, but after their home teacher left, he came out from the kitchen and said that he wanted to set a date!! We said that if he got baptized by September 22, he could attend the Ward Temple Night, and that he could baptise his daughter who would be turning 8 in October. His wife then commented that she had put on their dry erase board a BB on this Saturday which stood for Ben's baptism. She even jokingly said to the Second Counselor that if she gave the opening prayer to sacrament that Ben would be baptized this Saturday at 7:00. Well, Ben thought about being baptized this Saturday for a moment and he said yes, he would like that. He said that he was tired of waiting and that he wants to be baptized!! We filled out the Baptismal Record Form and figured out the program that night. His son really wanted to say a prayer and his two daughters wanted to bear their testimonies. We asked Ben if he would like the girls to bear their testimonies before he's baptized or after and he said after because he wanted to get into that water!! When his daughter realized that he would be the one baptizing her, she was so excited and I could tell that Ben was very touched. It didn't take long for news to spread throughout the ward! We will definitely be using the chapel come Saturday! Sister Whitaker and I were a little shocked at first because we didn't want to get our hopes up.
Sister Flynn's sister is living with them right now and we started teaching her. She is in 1 Nephi 16 already and a few of her questions have been answered by Ben. She is in a great environment and we are so happy she came to church with her little boy Aiden who's three.
On Friday I felt we were at the right place at just the right time. A less active sister had experienced a very troubling thing in her life, something she didn't share details about, but as we talked about the atonement I kept feeling impressed that she needed a Priesthood blessing. We were unable to contact someone from the ward so we had the Elders come over and they offered a blessing of comfort. The spirit was very strong there in her home as we left and by then I could tell she was more at ease.
On Tuesday Sister Whitaker went on a departing Temple trip and I spent the time with the Sisters serving in Carthage. We provided service at the City Hall and also painted nails at a care facility. The drive down to Nauvoo and back was full of trunky talk :) It was a great day though and I was happy to be back in Iowa City and to get back to work.
We had a lesson with Paul this week and Kristilyn, the bishop's daughter helped translate. She studied French in school and will be leaving in September for her mission to Korea.
Later today we will be in Ottomowa and then on Wednesday we'll have P-day and then transfers on Thursday. I'm a little anxious to find out who my new companion will be. I hope we get along well. We still don't know about the housing situation yet, but come September 1st, we'll have to be out of the Nielsen's home.
